Fair Housing

According to state and federal laws, no one can be discriminated against because of age, ancestry, color, religious creed (including religious dress and grooming practices), disability (mental and physical) including HIV and AIDS, marital status, medical condition, genetic information, military and veteran status, national origin, race, sex (which includes pregnancy), gender, gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation.

The County of San Diego, under direction of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, has a responsibility to support fair housing policies within the unincorporated area of San Diego County, as well as in the cities of Coronado, Del Mar, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway, and Solana Beach.

We strive to reduce discrimination in the housing rental, sales, lending, and insurance markets.

Everyone has a right to Fair Housing.

Federal Law Regarding People with Disabilities

• Anyone working with a program – in whole or in part - by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) may not discriminate.

• Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher and other housing programs are partially or fully-funded by HUD. Section 504 charges HUD with enforcing the right of individuals to live in federally-subsidized housing free from discrimination.

Fair Housing Program for Landlords

• One of the most common complaints about housing discrimination comes from people who are handicapped or who have a handicapped person in their family. Problems can arise when landlords do not understand their obligation to make changes in rules and policies to provide reasonable accommodations for these persons. Learn More.
